Marrickville, NSW Meet Shaggy 🐾 The Clever Hound Mix with a Soft Side! Shaggy has had quite the glow-up! Once an aloof, independent lad, he’s blossomed into an affectionate, playful young dog who loves nothing more than curling up beside his humans for a good pat. Add a sunny backyard, a few adventures and something deliciously appropriate to chew, and you’ve pretty much made his day. But don’t let those sofa-potato tendencies fool you — Shaggy is a hound mix, and he needs a home that can keep up with his curious nose, clever brain and adventurous spirit! He’s intelligent, eager to please and incredibly trainable, but he’s also a young dog who needs plenty of exercise, regular adventures and ongoing training to help him thrive. He isn’t looking for a home where a quick walk around the block is the main event — he needs people who want to get out and explore the world with him. Life with Shaggy 🌿 Shaggy is a bit of a two-speed kind of guy. Give him a proper adventure, plenty of exercise and opportunities to use his brain, and he’ll happily spend the rest of the day stretched out on the couch or soaking up the sunshine in the backyard. As a hound mix, he loves exploring with his nose, investigating the world around him and following interesting scents. Sniffy walks, bush adventures, enrichment games and learning new skills will all help keep his mind and body satisfied. He’s eager to please and responds beautifully to clear guidance and positive reinforcement, making ongoing training a rewarding experience for everyone. He’s affectionate, playful and wonderfully curious when he feels comfortable, with a cheeky puppy side that keeps things entertaining! Like most young dogs, Shaggy can occasionally get a little carried away during play. The good news? He responds beautifully to correction and is very keen to get things right. He does, however, need a home committed to continuing his training, providing plenty of appropriate chew toys and ensuring his physical and mental needs are met. A bored Shaggy is likely to invent his own entertainment — and we suspect his ideas might not always align with yours! He’s comfortable being left home alone for a few hours without signs of separation anxiety. He’s also crate trained and happily settles in his crate for periods during the day, including at mealtimes. His ideal home 🏡 Shaggy would thrive with an active family, couple or individual who genuinely enjoys having a dog to do things with. His ideal humans will understand the needs of a hound mix and be ready to provide regular exercise, exciting adventures, ongoing socialisation and consistent training as he matures. Think long sniffy walks, exploring new places, training sessions, enrichment activities and plenty of opportunities to experience the world in a positive way. Shaggy has all the makings of a fantastic companion, but he needs an engaged family who will help him channel his intelligence and energy into good things. A home with another young, playful dog could be a wonderful fit, giving Shaggy a friend to play with and learn from, provided their personalities and play styles are compatible. What about kids? 👧🧒 Shaggy has lived with three children aged 7, 9 and 12, and has been gentle and respectful of their space and moods. He hasn’t been a jumper or an over-the-top pest, making him a lovely candidate for a family home with children who understand how to interact respectfully with dogs. Canine companions 🐶 Shaggy currently lives with two Labradors and gets along well with them, adapting to different play styles and listening when given guidance. On walks, he generally greets other dogs politely and takes his cues from them rather than insisting on being the life of the party. In busier daycare settings, however, he can become overexcited and play too roughly, and he has shown some reactivity towards small dogs when they enter his pen. This is being managed successfully by his daycare team with careful introductions and supervision. His new family will need to continue working on calm, appropriate interactions and ensure play stays fun for everyone. He hasn’t been tested with cats, so we don’t yet know how he would respond to feline housemates. The bottom line? ❤️ Shaggy is affectionate, playful, bright as a button and eager to please. He has so much potential and will make a wonderful companion for someone ready to invest in his ongoing training and development. He’s past the aloof stage and well on his way to becoming your devoted best mate but he’s still a young hound mix who needs more than cuddles and a backyard. He needs adventures, exercise, mental stimulation and people who will keep helping him grow into the very best version of himself. If you’re an active household looking for a clever, curious companion to join you on life's adventures and you're ready for the commitment that comes with a young hound — Shaggy could be your guy!
