Adopting a dog in Townsville: what Queensland law asks of you

Queensland dogs are covered by the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. A dog must be microchipped before 12 weeks of age, or before it is sold or given away, and registered with your local council from 12 weeks. Desexed dogs pay a much lower council fee, so check your council for the current amount.

Anyone supplying or advertising a dog born on or after 26 May 2017 must show a breeder supply number. This applies to dogs only. Queensland has no equivalent of Victoria's Pet Exchange Register.

Paralysis ticks are a real, close to year-round risk across South East Queensland, especially in bushland-fringe and coastal suburbs. Ask your vet about a registered tick-prevention product, search your dog daily after walks, and plan for summer heat and humidity.

Dog adoption in Townsville: common questions

How many dogs are available for adoption in Townsville?

There are 5 adoptable rescue dogs listed in Townsville right now. Rescue numbers move quickly as animals are adopted, so the count changes between visits.

Which rescues do these Townsville dogs come from?

Every dog on this page comes from RSPCA Queensland. Each listing links straight to that rescue's own page, where the application is handled.

Is LocalPetFinder a shelter?

No. LocalPetFinder is a discovery platform, not a rescue. We bring listings together in one place so you do not have to check each rescue's website separately. Applications, approvals and adoption decisions are handled entirely by the rescue.

Does it cost anything to use?

No. LocalPetFinder is free. Adoption fees are set by the rescue and are paid to them directly, not to us.

Can I adopt a Townsville dog if I live elsewhere in Queensland?

That is up to the rescue. Some rehome only within their local area, others will consider adopters further afield. The rescue's own listing page states their policy — check it before applying.

Is LocalPetFinder the same as PetRescue?

No. PetRescue.com.au is one of Australia's largest national adoption sites, listing animals from rescues right across the country. LocalPetFinder brings together rescue dogs for Townsville and the surrounding area, alongside the local rules on council registration, desexing and microchipping in Queensland. The two are separate platforms.

What is a local alternative to Adopt A Pet or PetRescue in Townsville?

LocalPetFinder lists adoptable rescue dogs from rescues serving Townsville, refreshed regularly. Adopt A Pet (adoptapet.com) is US-based with limited Australian coverage, and PetRescue lists nationally. Every listing here links straight to the rescue that has the animal, so you apply with them directly.

Do I need to register an adopted dog in Townsville?

Yes. Queensland dogs must be microchipped and registered with the local council from 12 weeks of age. Desexed dogs pay a reduced fee, and your council's website lists the current amount.

How serious are paralysis ticks for dogs in Townsville?

Very. South East Queensland sits in the paralysis tick's range and the mild winters keep it active close to year-round. Tick paralysis can be fatal, so use a vet-recommended prevention product and check your dog by hand after every walk.
