New to adopting? Our Western Australia adoption guides cover what adoption costs, council registration and desexing rules that apply right across Western Australia, including Perth.
WA's Cat Act 2011 requires every pet cat to be microchipped, sterilised and registered with the local council by six months of age. Unlike NSW, Victoria and Queensland, desexing a pet cat here is the law, not a choice.
A rescue cat arrives already desexed and microchipped, which leaves council registration to you. Containment rules are local laws that vary by council, so check yours. Paralysis ticks are not established in WA, so fleas and worms are the routine parasites to manage.

Yes. Under WA's Cat Act 2011 every pet cat must be microchipped, sterilised and registered with the local council by six months of age, unless a vet certifies an exemption. Rescue cats arrive desexed and microchipped, so registration is the step left for you.
