Adopting a cat in Newcastle: what NSW law asks of you

Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 a cat must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age, or before it is sold or given away, and registered for life on the NSW Pet Registry by six months.

A desexed cat adopted from an eligible council pound, shelter or approved rehoming organisation registers for $0 lifetime, and rescue cats almost always arrive desexed and microchipped already.

Paralysis ticks are found along the NSW coast and in bushland, most actively from about August to February, and they affect cats as well as dogs. An indoor cat is far less exposed; if yours goes outside, ask your vet about a cat-safe tick product and never use a dog product on a cat.

Cat adoption in Newcastle: common questions

How many cats are available for adoption in Newcastle?

There are 38 adoptable rescue cats listed in Newcastle right now. Rescue numbers move quickly as animals are adopted, so the count changes between visits.

Which rescues do these Newcastle cats come from?

Every cat on this page comes from Dog Rescue Newcastle, Hunter Animal Rescue, RSPCA NSW. Each listing links straight to that rescue's own page, where the application is handled.

Is LocalPetFinder a shelter?

No. LocalPetFinder is a discovery platform, not a rescue. We bring listings together in one place so you do not have to check each rescue's website separately. Applications, approvals and adoption decisions are handled entirely by the rescue.

Does it cost anything to use?

No. LocalPetFinder is free. Adoption fees are set by the rescue and are paid to them directly, not to us.

Can I adopt a Newcastle cat if I live elsewhere in New South Wales?

That is up to the rescue. Some rehome only within their local area, others will consider adopters further afield. The rescue's own listing page states their policy — check it before applying.

Is LocalPetFinder the same as PetRescue?

No. PetRescue.com.au is one of Australia's largest national adoption sites, listing animals from rescues right across the country. LocalPetFinder brings together rescue cats for Newcastle and the surrounding area, alongside the local rules on council registration, desexing and microchipping in New South Wales. The two are separate platforms.

What is a local alternative to Adopt A Pet or PetRescue in Newcastle?

LocalPetFinder lists adoptable rescue cats from rescues serving Newcastle, refreshed regularly. Adopt A Pet (adoptapet.com) is US-based with limited Australian coverage, and PetRescue lists nationally. Every listing here links straight to the rescue that has the animal, so you apply with them directly.

Do I need to register an adopted cat in Newcastle?

Yes. NSW cats must be microchipped and registered for life on the NSW Pet Registry by six months. A desexed cat adopted from an eligible pound, shelter or approved rehoming organisation registers for $0.

Do paralysis ticks affect cats in Newcastle?

Yes. The paralysis tick lives in coastal and bushland NSW and can paralyse cats as well as dogs. Keeping a cat indoors cuts the risk sharply; for a cat that goes outside, use a vet-recommended cat-safe product, never one made for dogs.

Can I adopt a cat from the Newcastle council pound?

Not directly. The City of Newcastle's animal facility at Tighes Hill is a pound, not an adoption centre: animals that go unclaimed pass to rehoming organisations. To adopt or foster one, use the council's Animal Rescue Enquiry form on its Lost Pets in Ranger Care page. Newcastle's foster-based rescues and the RSPCA's Hunter shelter at Rutherford, near Maitland, rehome cats directly.

Is there a 24-hour emergency vet in Newcastle?

Yes. The Animal Referral and Emergency Centre (AREC) in Broadmeadow provides 24/7 emergency care and describes itself as Newcastle's only referral and emergency animal hospital. Check its website for current contact details before you need them.
