Adopting a dog in Perth: what WA law asks of you

WA dogs are covered by the Dog Act 1976. A dog must be microchipped by three months of age and before it is sold or transferred, and registered with your local council from three months, for one year, three years or life. Sterilised dogs pay a much lower fee, set by each council.

WA has no Pet Exchange Register and no breeder supply number. The only pre-sale rule is that a dog must already be microchipped and registered, so ask to see the microchip paperwork for any dog you are offered privately.

Paralysis ticks are not established in Perth. The everyday hazards are summer heat and hot pavement, snakes around bushland and river reserves in the warmer months, and 1080 fox baits in many reserves, which are lethal to dogs. Watch for the 1080 warning signs and keep your dog on lead in bushland.

Dog adoption in Perth: common questions

How many dogs are available for adoption in Perth?

There are 182 adoptable rescue dogs listed in Perth right now. Rescue numbers move quickly as animals are adopted, so the count changes between visits.

Which rescues do these Perth dogs come from?

Every dog on this page comes from Dogs' Refuge Home, K9 Dog Rescue, SAFE Perth, Swan Animal Haven. Each listing links straight to that rescue's own page, where the application is handled.

Is LocalPetFinder a shelter?

No. LocalPetFinder is a discovery platform, not a rescue. We bring listings together in one place so you do not have to check each rescue's website separately. Applications, approvals and adoption decisions are handled entirely by the rescue.

Does it cost anything to use?

No. LocalPetFinder is free. Adoption fees are set by the rescue and are paid to them directly, not to us.

Can I adopt a Perth dog if I live elsewhere in Western Australia?

That is up to the rescue. Some rehome only within their local area, others will consider adopters further afield. The rescue's own listing page states their policy — check it before applying.

Is LocalPetFinder the same as PetRescue?

No. PetRescue.com.au is one of Australia's largest national adoption sites, listing animals from rescues right across the country. LocalPetFinder brings together rescue dogs for Perth and the surrounding area, alongside the local rules on council registration, desexing and microchipping in Western Australia. The two are separate platforms.

What is a local alternative to Adopt A Pet or PetRescue in Perth?

LocalPetFinder lists adoptable rescue dogs from rescues serving Perth, refreshed regularly. Adopt A Pet (adoptapet.com) is US-based with limited Australian coverage, and PetRescue lists nationally. Every listing here links straight to the rescue that has the animal, so you apply with them directly.

Do I need to register an adopted dog in Perth?

Yes. WA dogs must be microchipped and registered with the local council from three months of age, for one year, three years or life. Sterilised dogs pay a reduced fee, and concession card holders commonly get a discount.

What dangers should a new dog owner in Perth know about?

Heat, snakes and 1080 baits. Walk early or late in summer to avoid hot pavement and heatstroke, keep your dog clear of snakes in bushland and wetland reserves, and never let it scavenge in areas signed for 1080 baiting.
