No. LocalPetFinder is a discovery platform, not a rescue. We bring listings together in one place so you do not have to check each rescue's website separately. Applications, approvals and adoption decisions are handled entirely by the rescue.
No. LocalPetFinder is free. Adoption fees are set by the rescue and are paid to them directly, not to us.
That is up to the rescue. Some rehome only within their local area, others will consider adopters further afield. The rescue's own listing page states their policy — check it before applying.
No. LocalPetFinder is an independent site that lists the dogs up for adoption at SPCA New Zealand's centres, so you can see them by city in one place. To adopt, you apply to the SPCA itself: open a dog's profile and use the Register to adopt button on the SPCA's own page. SPCA adoptions are by appointment, and the SPCA makes every adoption decision.
SPCA New Zealand charges the same fees at every centre: $399 for a puppy under five months, $149 for a dog aged five months to eight years, and $75 for a senior dog aged nine or older. Dogs are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated before adoption, and the fee includes a $15 lifetime registration on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register. A $2.50 service charge is added, and long-stay animals (adoptable for more than 42 days) are 30% off.
Yes. Under section 42 of the Dog Control Act 1996, every dog older than three months must be registered with your local council for the current registration year, and the maximum fine for an unregistered dog is $3,000. Councils set their own registration fees, so check your council's website. The Act also requires an SPCA to register a dog before it is rehomed to a new owner.
In most cases, yes. Section 36A of the Dog Control Act 1996 requires a dog registered for the first time on or after 1 July 2006 to be microchipped within two months of registration, and your council will ask to verify it. Registered working dogs are exempt, and dogs classified as dangerous or menacing must also be microchipped.
