About Vader

*** Please read the whole post *** Amstaff cross | Male | 2½ years | Big personality, bigger heart Vader is a big, strong, affectionate goofball with a little bit of Shar Pei, a whole lot of energy and an enormous amount of love to give. Everyone who meets Vader when he's out and about seems to say the same thing: "What a sweetheart." And he really is. Vader absolutely loves people. He's affectionate, playful and happiest when he's involved in whatever his humans are doing. His favourite game is a good old-fashioned tug-of-war in the backyard, and if you're looking for a dog who will enthusiastically join you for a walk before coming home for some serious affection, Vader may be your boy. But Vader isn't the right dog for every household, and finding him the right home is much more important than simply finding him a home. 🏡 The home Vader needs Vader needs someone who is confident handling a large, powerful dog and is willing to continue the training that is already helping him enormously. He loves his daily exercise and would ideally have two on-lead walks each day, along with play and enrichment at home. Vader is not a dog-park dog and should not be allowed off lead in unsecured public areas. He has a strong instinct to chase fast-moving things and, despite the progress he's making through behavioural training, his new family needs to understand and manage that instinct responsibly. That doesn't mean Vader can't have doggy friends. In fact, Vader has successfully lived with three other dogs for more than a year. Once he knows another dog and relationships have been properly established, he can happily share his home with them. Introductions to unfamiliar dogs, however, need to be controlled and gradual. Vader can be wary of dogs he doesn't know, so an existing dog would need to be carefully matched with him rather than simply introduced and expected to get along. ❤️ A people dog Humans are Vader's favourite species. He's extremely affectionate and loves being around his people, which means he wouldn't suit a household where everyone is away for long periods every day. He is, however, crate trained and settles happily with a large bone or a good-quality chew to occupy him, so his humans don't have to be beside him every minute of the day. Because Vader is a solid, powerful boy, he isn't suitable for a home with young children. There's no sinister reason for that — he's simply strong, enthusiastic and quite capable of bowling a little person over without meaning to. 🦴 Vader's perfect person We're looking for someone who sees Vader's needs and thinks, "Yep, I can work with that." Someone who: - is experienced and confident with strong dogs; - enjoys daily walks and spending time with their dog; - will continue Vader's training and reinforce the progress he's already made; - understands that dog parks and off-lead public exercise aren't appropriate for him; - won't regularly leave him alone for long periods; and - wants a ridiculously affectionate, playful companion who's going to become a genuine part of their life. For the right person, Vader has an enormous amount to offer. 🩺 Vader's story Vader hasn't had the easiest start. As a puppy, he suffered a broken leg and had a metal rod placed in it. The issue wasn't identified until later, and Paws & Claws arranged and funded surgery to have the rod removed. Vader has since fully recovered from the operation and is back to enjoying life. Now we'd really like the next chapter of his story to be the permanent one. Vader doesn't need somebody who expects him to be the perfect dog on day one. He needs somebody who understands him, gives him structure and continues the work that's already helping him become the best version of himself. In return, you'll get one very handsome, very enthusiastic and extremely loving best mate. ❤️ Vader is desexed, microchipped and vaccinated. Located at Clarence Gardens. His adoption fee is $250.
