About Fitzgerald

When Fitzgerald first arrived with us, he made his feelings very clear. Touching him? Absolutely not. Getting too close? You better think twice. A hiss, a growl, or a well aimed whack was his way of letting everyone know that he was frightened. Over the past couple of months, Fitzgerald has been on an incredible journey. With patience, consistency and lots of positive experiences, he has slowly started to let his guard down. And what a privilege it has been to watch him discover that perhaps humans aren’t so bad after all. These days, Fitzgerald has a small circle of people he trusts. For those special few, he has revealed a completely different side of himself. He will allow his trusted people to gently pat him, and even climb onto their laps. Fitzgerald loves a chin scratch and will reward you with one of the sweetest sounds, a happy purr. Fitzgerald also had an ulcer on his right eye which has affected his vision on that side. Because of this, his adopter will need to be mindful that he will not always see someone approaching from his right hand side, particularly if they move suddenly. A sudden movement or unexpected noise can startle him and when he is frightened his instinct may be to defend himself with a quick whack. If there is one thing Fitzgerald has never been shy about, it’s his enthusiasm for dinner. As a former stray, Fitzgerald has learned that food is incredibly important. He can become very excited when food is involved and can also become food aggressive. His new family will need to understand his relationship with food. He needs a calm, patient home where he can settle in at his own pace. His new family will need to be comfortable reading his body language, respecting boundaries and giving him the time he needs to feel secure. Fitzgerald will suit a quiet home where he is the only pet. No children in the home. Older teens aged 16 plus would be best. Fitzgerald is FIV positive and needs to be indoor only.
