The short answer
The City of Rockingham pound on Hurrell Way is for reclaiming lost dogs, not adopting. To adopt, go to a rescue. K9 Rescue Group at Nambeelup is the main kennel-based rescue for Peel, Rockingham, Kwinana and Cockburn, with published fees from $425 to $700. Don't Go Astray is a foster-based rescue in the Kwinana area, and Greyhound Adoptions WA is a Rockingham-based greyhound rescue. Applying to more than one at a time is normal.
How the Rockingham pound works
The City runs its Animal Management Facility at its Operations Centre, 2 Hurrell Way, off Dixon Road. It takes in dogs found wandering, handed in or surrendered, and its page lists the animals it currently holds. Visits are by appointment for collection only, so ring Ranger Services on (08) 9528 0333 first. Rangers work seven days a week, 7am to 7pm.
The City's guide says an identified dog is held for seven days and an unidentified dog for 72 hours, which the City can extend. Reclaiming a dog means paying an impound fee, a daily sustenance charge and registration if it is missing. Keeping your microchip and registration details current is the fastest way to get a lost dog home.
The City does not publish an adoption scheme of its own. Its guide lists rescue groups for people who want to adopt, and those groups are where Rockingham's adoptable dogs actually are.
1. K9 Rescue Group
Location: 58 Sunshine Place, Nambeelup, in the Peel region south of Rockingham.
Type: Not-for-profit kennel rescue since 1990, and a registered charity.
Covers: Peel, Rockingham, Kwinana and Cockburn.
Fees: Puppy $700, adult dog $550, senior dog $425, bonded pair $845.
K9 is the largest dog rescue on Rockingham's doorstep, and the City lists it among its rescue groups. You apply online or at reception, the team reviews it, then books a meet-and-greet in a quiet yard. There are no kennel walk-throughs, because a stressed dog in a busy kennel does not show its real nature. Bring photo ID, your landlord's permission if you rent, and everyone in the household. A resident dog must come too and must be sterilised. Its adoption process page sets out every step.
Best fit for: Adopters who want a wide choice of dogs, a clear process and published fees.
Friction points: It is closed Monday and Tuesday, and opens Wednesday to Friday 9am to 3pm and weekends 12pm to 4pm. Many of its dogs are large bull breed or working crosses.
2. Don't Go Astray
Location: Kwinana area; dogs live with foster carers.
Type: Foster-based rescue and a registered charity.
Fees: Set per animal; check each listing.
Don't Go Astray takes in stray and surrendered dogs, cats and other animals and places them in foster homes until adoption. A foster dog has been living in a house, so its carer can tell you how it copes with visitors, other pets and being left alone. See its current animals on its adopt and foster page.
Best fit for: Adopters who want a dog with a known home history.
3. Greyhound Adoptions WA
Location: Rockingham-based, with foster carers across Perth.
Type: Volunteer-run greyhound rescue and a registered charity.
Greyhound Adoptions WA is run entirely by volunteers and holds regular meet days, including at pet stores in Rockingham. It is a separate group from Greyhounds as Pets WA. Greyhounds are calm, quiet dogs indoors, though many have a strong chase instinct, so ask about cats and small pets. Its adoption page lists the dogs ready now.
Perth rescues worth a look
Rockingham adopters also look north. Dogs' Refuge Home in Shenton Park, SAFE Perth's foster network and Swan Animal Haven all rehome dogs to the southern suburbs. It is a longer drive, so book before you go. The Perth rescues guide compares them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I adopt a dog straight from the Rockingham pound?
The City of Rockingham does not run a public adoption program from its pound. Its Animal Management Facility on Hurrell Way holds lost and wandering dogs so owners can reclaim them, and the City's own guide to keeping animals points people who want to adopt to rescue groups, including K9 Rescue Group, Don't Go Astray and Dogs' Refuge Home. So the practical route for a Rockingham adopter is a rescue, not the pound.
How long does the Rockingham pound keep a dog?
The City's guide, citing the Dog Act 1976, says a dog with identification is kept for seven days and a dog without any identification for 72 hours, which the City can extend. If your own dog goes missing, ring Ranger Services on (08) 9528 0333 straight away. Collection is by appointment, usually between 9am and 4pm on weekdays, and only the owner or an agreed delegate can collect.
How much does it cost to adopt a dog near Rockingham?
K9 Rescue Group publishes its fees: $700 for a puppy up to 6 months, $550 for an adult dog, $425 for a senior dog aged 7 or over and $845 for a bonded pair. Every K9 dog is vet checked, sterilised, vaccinated and microchipped. Foster-based groups such as Don't Go Astray and Greyhound Adoptions WA set a fee per dog, so check the listing. Registration with the City is a separate cost.
What does dog registration cost in Rockingham?
For a sterilised dog the City of Rockingham charges $20 for one year, $42.50 for three years or $100 for life. An unsterilised dog costs $50, $120 or $250. You need a vet certificate or statutory declaration for the sterilised rate, and pensioners with a valid card get 50% off. The dog year runs from 1 November to 31 October. A rescue dog arrives sterilised and microchipped, so you pay the lower rate.
How many dogs can I keep in Rockingham?
The City's dogs local law allows two dogs over three months on a residential property, and three on a rural or special rural property. You can apply to the City to keep one more. Check this before you adopt a second dog.
