The short answer
The main place to adopt a dog in Toowoomba is RSPCA Toowoomba, a large shelter at Wellcamp near the airport. Foster rescues such as Off The Chain K9 Rescue and Karma's Place Rescue (based in Kingaroy) also list dogs for the area. Toowoomba Regional Council's pound at Drayton does not sell or rehome dogs; unclaimed animals may go to the RSPCA. Every rescue dog leaves desexed and microchipped, and you then register it with the council.
How to use this guide
Each profile below covers where the organisation is, how adoption works, what the fee covers, and who it suits. A shelter lets you meet several dogs in one visit. A foster carer can tell you how a dog behaves with children, cats or other dogs.
Applying to more than one organisation at once is normal. Popular dogs can be adopted quickly, so have your paperwork ready before you apply.
1. RSPCA Toowoomba Animal Care Centre
Location: 36 Airport Drive, Wellcamp.
Type: RSPCA Queensland shelter, on a purpose-built campus since 2020.
Adoption fees: Shown on each listing. RSPCA Queensland listings show adult dogs at about $450 and puppies at about $645.
RSPCA Queensland moved its Toowoomba shelter to Wellcamp in early 2020. It opens Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, and is closed on Monday and Tuesday. You apply to adopt online, then the team arranges a meet. Phone 07 4634 1304 with questions, or see the current dogs on the RSPCA Toowoomba page.
Best fit for: Adopters who want to see several dogs at one site and apply online.
Friction points: It is closed on Monday and Tuesday, and popular dogs can be adopted within days.
2. Off The Chain K9 Rescue
Location: Foster homes around Toowoomba (postal address in Clifford Gardens).
Type: Registered charity and foster-based dog rescue.
Adoption fees: Set for each dog and shown on its listing.
Off The Chain K9 Rescue takes dogs from council pounds across Queensland and New South Wales, and runs a Last Litter program for unplanned litters. Its dogs live with foster carers, so the carer can describe daily life with the dog. You must complete its adoption application before any meet, and send photos of your yard and fencing within 48 hours. If you need a dog held for more than three days, it asks for a $100 holding deposit. See its dogs on its PetRescue page.
Best fit for: Adopters who want a foster carer's notes and are ready to apply in full.
Friction points: Incomplete applications are not followed up, so allow time to fill it in properly.
3. Karma's Place Rescue
Location: 1 Ivins Street, Kingaroy, in the South Burnett.
Type: Registered charity rescue.
Adoption fees: Shown on each listing.
Karma's Place is not in Toowoomba itself, but its dogs often appear in Darling Downs listings, including ours. Expect a drive to Kingaroy to meet a dog unless the rescue arranges otherwise. Contact details and current animals are on karmasplacerescue.org.au.
Best fit for: Adopters happy to travel for the right dog.
Friction points: It is based outside Toowoomba, so meeting a dog takes more planning.

Toowoomba Regional Council runs the Animal Management Centre at 393 to 425 Anzac Avenue, Drayton. It holds lost dogs so owners can collect them, and opens Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm. The council does not sell impounded animals or take expressions of interest in them. Unclaimed animals may be given to the RSPCA, which is why RSPCA Toowoomba is the place to look for a pound dog. Lost-pet details are on the council lost and found page.
What does not make a rescue a good or bad choice
- The size of the fee. Fees reflect the vet work already done, not the quality of the dog.
- Shelter or foster home. Neither is better. A shelter is quicker to visit; a foster home tells you more about daily life.
- A familiar name. A small local charity can be the best match for your household.
- Breed labels. Most rescue dogs in regional Queensland are crossbreeds, and that is often where the best family dogs are.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I adopt a dog in Toowoomba?
The main shelter is RSPCA Toowoomba at 36 Airport Drive, Wellcamp. Foster rescues such as Off The Chain K9 Rescue also have dogs in the area, and Karma's Place Rescue in Kingaroy lists dogs for the Darling Downs. Checking all of them gives you the widest choice.
Can I adopt a dog from the Toowoomba pound?
No. Toowoomba Regional Council does not sell impounded animals or take expressions of interest in them. Animals that are not claimed may be given to the RSPCA, so RSPCA Toowoomba is where a pound dog is most likely to appear for adoption.
When is RSPCA Toowoomba open?
It opens Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday. You apply to adopt online, and the phone number is 07 4634 1304.
How much does it cost to adopt a dog in Toowoomba?
RSPCA Queensland listings show adult dogs at about $450 and puppies at about $645. Off The Chain K9 Rescue and Karma's Place set a fee for each dog on its listing. The fee covers desexing, vaccination and a microchip, which would cost more if you paid for them yourself.
Do I have to register my dog with the council?
Yes. Toowoomba Regional Council requires dogs to be registered before 12 weeks of age, and within 14 days of getting an older dog or moving to the region. Queensland law also requires dogs to be microchipped, which a rescue dog already is.
Toowoomba registration and Queensland dog law
Toowoomba Regional Council requires dogs to be registered before 12 weeks of age, and within 14 days of getting an older dog or moving into the region. Registration is renewed by 30 June, and your dog wears its tag in public. The details are on the council's dog registration page.
The state law is the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008, which requires dogs to be microchipped and registered with their council. A rescue dog arrives already desexed and microchipped, so you simply register it in your name.
